HOUSEPARENTING: WHAT IS IT?
Houseparents are educators and caregivers that work in the residential sector of a private boarding school. The structure of the specific program can vary so the responsibilities from school to school can be different. Generally speaking, houseparents live with students in the residential facilities, walking with them through the everyday happenings of life.
The particular school we work in provides private residences to houseparents that are attached to the large single-family styled student homes. Each married couple is responsible to oversee and care for 8 to 12 students. Houseparents provide support through implementation of the school's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Positive Behavior Interventions (PBI), and encouraging developmental assets. Additionally, houseparents help students learn about maintaining a home, developing fitness routines, preparing meals, navigating friendships and other relationships, and making time for fun!
